Dining 101 [Ottawa]: Oh So Good! Dessert & Coffee House

Oh So Good!

Oh So Good!

Restaurant: Oh So Good! Dessert & Coffee House
Location: 25 York Street, Ottawa, ON
Cuisine: Desserts/ Coffee Shop
Menu: N/A
Price: $10 or Less

After grabbing some wings at the Pub, it was time to satisfy that sweet tooth with a visit to Oh So Good! It was a warm night so walking through the market to find a few sugary confections was quite enjoyable (also helped work off those calories, or so I tell myself:P). I’d actually never been here before, but I’d heard enough good reviews to want to give it a try.
Walking into the quaint little cafe, I realized that I had walked in through their open windows (apparently, the glass wall opening was NOT the door!). Do not be fooled by the “Travel Agency” sign located above the gated side-door, that is indeed to correct entrance! But once you find your way in you’re greeted by an interesting interior with funky artwork and rustic fixtures.
The general flow of the dessert house is kind of like True Confections in Vancouver. You can look at the assortment of cakes and desserts then place your order and seat yourself. A bit more casual then True Confections, which still provides service, Oh So Good! is very much a self-service eatery (you even pour your own water!).

Caramel Banana Cake

Caramel Banana Cake

I felt that the Caramel Banana Cake had the best presentation among the desserts ordered, yet most disappointing in tastes. The Caramel icing was a unique alternative from the usual Banana-Chocolate you’d usually find at your local coffee shop. Unfortunately, they were unable to perfect the basic texture and flavor of the Banana Cake. Simply it lacked that rich Banana flavor, and my friend said it tasted like Carrot cake which may be due to the fact that even a slight addition of cinnamon was able to mask the dull flavor. Yet what bothered me the most was the unpleasantly dry texture.

New York Raspberry Cheesecake

New York Raspberry Cheesecake

I’d say this is a solid New York Cheesecake. The Cream Cheese was rich and complimented well by the Raspberry glaze. I don’t usually go for anything Raspberry, but then fruitiness of the glaze was a good equalizer for the heaviness of the Cream Cheese. Although the highlight of this piece of cake would have to be the golden crust. Baked with a nice shine and didn’t crumble when you forked into it. Loved the crust, but probably not my top choice because the flavor was so standard.

Key Lime Tart

Key Lime Tart

I love lemony desserts because that sweet/sour taste really tingles the tastes buds, a great choice after a heavy meal. The Key Lime filling was whipped to a light and fluffy texture. Not too sweet, preserving a good level of tang from the Lemon zest. In terms of filling, I was quite impressed but I think there may have been a mishap with baking. The crust tasted bitter for this tart and it was fairly noticeable because the Key Lime wasn’t too overly rich. I’m sure it would be perfection if it had the crust from the Chocolate Tart.

Chocolate Tart

Chocolate Tart

Unlike the other desserts, the Chocolate Tart was heated up before serving to provide a soft and pudding-like filling. The center was quite rich, but I wouldn’t say overly sweet when accompanied with a bite of crust. In comparison to the crust of the Key Lime Tart, this was slightly sweet (not bitter at all) and softer (may have been the work of the microwave?). Overall, this was the choice of the night.

Not only was there a great selection of desserts, it was a great atmosphere for enjoying a long chat with friends. I loved how the glass walls open up so you can really enjoy the Summer night! I’ll definitely be back to see what other cakes they serve up!

  1. 😦 They don’t make the desserts themselves. That’s very disappointing for a “dessert specialized café”… But anyway I also like the atmosphere of this place

    • Oh So Disappointing:(! The Dessert Cafes I’ve visited elsewhere usually make everything in-house…
But at least it’s still a great place to sit, eat, and enjoy a long conversation with friends:)
