Restaurant: Richtree Market Restaurant
Location: 50 Rideau Street, Ottawa, ON
Cuisine: International/ Bakery/ Brunch
I’ve walked past Richtree a few times visiting Rideau Centre. Finally got a chance to try it out this morning. The view from the outside I could see that everything looked Market-fresh and you could already smell a savory aroma passing by. The quaint little tables and drooping trees also gave it an outdoor Mediterranean bistro vibe (in an indoor location;)). I had no idea what to expect; I thought it was just like any other restaurant?
But actually the concept of the restaurant is a self-serve based system. Welcomed with these shopping cards, I left my winter layers at the table and set off into the numerous stands of culinary delights. All you have to do is order whatever you like and hand over your shopping card to the stand of choice. You pay when you leave the restaurant, simple and efficient (although you really lose count of what you ordered!).
With so much fresh ingredients, I spent awhile choosing what I wanted for breakfast. Surrounded by vibrant colors and international varieties, it was quite a dilemma!
Richtree offers a lot of Breakfast Specials and endless little sides. Decided to go with a something off the Breakfast menu!
I had to go with the Smoked Salmon Omelette. I just love that smokey taste of the salmon and the fact that the salmon didn’t lose the smoked texture from being cooked with the eggs. It’s always a challenge to “not cook” the smoked salmon when you mix it in with hot foods. But the omelette didn’t just offer a solid portion of salmon, the green peppers and tomatoes were extremely fresh and again not over cooked. The tomatoes had a refreshing juiciness to it. While the eggs were cooked with a crisp rim and a fluffy texture (cooked perfectly, no burns just a nice white/yellow hue). A great start to the day:).
While being a Bread-Fanatic, I obviously had to get a side of bread for breakfast. But at Richtree, you don’t have to settle for a simple plate of toast. The bruschetta had a great color and the sliced baguette looked amazing. Nevertheless, I was craving some garlic bread, which they toasted-to-order in a masonry oven! Nothing says perfection than a toasty bread topped with a glistening glaze of garlic butter (you can also get it with cheese too!).
So aside from the Mind-boggling choices, you can also get a simple Breakfast set. I think a lot of restaurants offer Bacon, Eggs, and Hashbrowns, but the benefit of eating at Richtree is their fresh ingredients. Just a light breakfast with crisp slices of bacon and fluffy scrambled eggs. The hashbrowns also had a nice mixed texture of crisp and tender goodness:). Along with fresh squeezed Orange Juice (although they have A LOT of different fresh fruits to choose from!), it was a great place for breakfast!
With a variety from fresh omelettes to sushi and Vietnamese Pho, Richtree really offers a great selection. During a day of shopping around Rideau Centre, Richtree would be the perfect place to grab a crepe or sit down and dig into some fresh dishes. Despite the less appealing ratings, I love the self-service style and appreciate their quality ingredients.
